When Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was released back in 2022, it had some rather thin content to offer. Despite the rich lore that the Ghostbusters IP has available to mine, there were only a few maps and a “story mode” available. The latter served as a tutorial, to a certain degree. Now, the developers over at IllFonic have not only added more; maps, customizations, and ghost classes, but also an extension of the story. Which, by the way, is free DLC for everyone to enjoy. This was a welcomed surprise for players, especially since this story extension was dropping during the Halloween season.
So, naturally, it was only befitting to have the fan-favorite villain Samhain make an appearance in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. There was now a ‘good vs. evil’ conflict to partake in, that came with some rather high stakes. This is somewhat unusual for a game that is an asymmetrical survival game. Regardless, Illfonic found a way to fill a narrative into a game that is generally just a multi-player experience. This format worked pretty well. So, players are clamoring for more story content, not to mention multi-player, and they might be seeing more additions coming down the pike.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – New Customization DLC
During the last Seasonal update, players were gifted with Christmas attire, such as winter hats and ugly sweaters. This may seem rather generic, given the holiday season, but it was still nice to have a little something extra to spruce up your avatar. Now, since the story mode came with an open-ended conclusion, there is no telling what could be next. This is especially true for customizations. It is safe to assume that since there’s a new movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, releasing sometime this year, then the next DLC will be related to it.
There was a trailer dropped a few months back. It showcased a good amount of footage regarding the premise. Additionally, it also confirmed that the original Ghostbusters; Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts and Ernie Hudson will be reprising their roles. So, in terms of customization, quite a few tidbits were shown that might make it into Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. One detail that fans seem to take a liking to was the new parkas. Which, by the way, is a call-back to the parkas that they wore in the Real Ghostbusters animated series.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – New Maps DLC
The developers of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed are on top of what fans are asking for. Even though the selection of maps right now is more robust than it was during the launch, a couple more wouldn’t hurt. Perhaps, we will get a map that is ice-themed and will have everything frozen over. It has been noted by the developers that the Spengler family will be making an appearance in future DLC. Thus, Bill Murray stated that doing the 2009 Ghostbusters Video Game was, “fun.” So, maybe he will be kind enough to grace us with his presence in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed sometime in the future?
Currently, the available maps are varied and well-designed. The Brewery, in particular, is ripe with places to hide and haunt. Chances are, there will be a new ghost class that will have ice powers, which will freeze up the busters. If the developers are indeed going for the Frozen Empire angle, then this could very well be the case. The Ghostbusters IP is teeming with characters and villains that could join Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. The character Samhain was in the animated series, so perhaps other popular spirits might make an appearance.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Gear DLC
So, The Boogeyman or even the Sandman could make nice additions to the gallery. Given that this title is a mix of the cinematic and animated universe, anything can happen. Also, there are some Easter eggs hidden in the firehouse, if players take time to look. Downstairs, beyond the containment unit, is a new basement used for storage and experiments. Against the wall, is the slime slinger from Ghostbusters II. Whether or not this can be geared up with future DLC, remains to be seen.
Whatever the case, the developers seem to be planning to be adding more content for the foreseeable future. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed felt a little hollow when it launched. Now, it appears to be getting better and better. Of course, the developers are always listening to feedback and finding ways to patch up problems to make this online experience more enjoyable. Plus, there are always new accessories, tints, and items being updated on the customization menu. The future looks bright for this title, and also for the Ghostbusters IP, itself.
Conclusion
Given that Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has been out for a couple of years, fans could be missing out. Especially, since it got lukewarm reviews when it initially launched. So, if you have been hesitant to check out this game, now is the best time to give it a go. The content that is now available is worth the price of admission. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is now available for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
