2016 was a massive year for gamers, but 2017’s releases look to put last year’s to shame. This year we have the massive Call of Duty WW2 to look forward to, the first strictly ‘boots on the ground’ release from the franchise in years, and the next wave of intergalactic warfare in Star Wars Battlefront 2. If you’re not a big fan of multiplayer games, then Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 will quench your thirst, with an expansive open world single player to keep you occupied for days. Below we take a look at 5 mainstream upcoming games that should raise your excitement levels, and keep you coming back for more.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War
Middle-earth Shadow of War is the open world action RPG sequel to MonolithSoft’s 2014 offering, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. After the cliffhanger of Shadow of Mordor, gamers are thrown straight into the story of Talion and Celebrimbor wielding the ring of power. Gamers will get to enjoy the gameplay experience of all out wars across Middle Earth’s fabled landscapes.
Call of Duty WW2
Call of Duty WW2 is perhaps one of the most anticipated releases of this year. This release will be taking games back to old school, ‘boots on the ground’ warfare. Nothing says back to basics quite like WW2, with a historically accurate multiplayer experience, building on the groundwork laid out by earlier WW2 game World at War. If that wasn’t enough, zombies mode will be returning with remastered maps. For fans of the COD franchise, this game will certainly be a must have.
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Nothing says intergalactic warfare quite like Star Wars Battlefront, and the follow-up Star Wars Battlefront 2 will have Star Wars fans rushing to stores around the world. The first battlefront came under criticism for neglecting its single player mode, and Battlefront 2 has improved on this criticism with a fleshed out single player mode. Gamers will be able to play as Iden Versio, a character from the original trilogy at the Battle of Endor. The story will take games all the way from Return of the Jedi to the Force Awakens, adding some much-needed clarification to the progression of the story. Of course, large scale intergalactic battles will characterize the rest of the experience, with new space battles and the ability to play as characters throughout all eras.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Yet another massive contender, next year’s release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the sequel to one of the most popular games within the Rockstar franchise. Gamers will be transported back in time to the grit of the American West. From cowboys roaming farmland to sketchy saloons, users will be free to enjoy the open world prowess of Rockstar Games. Many are anticipating that Red Dead will imitate the captivating online game play of GTA.
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is the sequel to Bungie’s popular futuristic release, Destiny. Gamers will be treated to an all-new solo campaign and a remake of the multiplayer experience. There will be three new subclasses, the Solar Warlock, Dawnblade and Void Titan classes. Each class will have a range of abilities, from the offensive all the way to the downright defensive. Player’s using the Titan’s Striker class can even create walls to act as improvised cover. The more offensively minded can use the Hunter’s Gunslinger trait to bob and weave to avoid gunfire and reload weapons on the fly. In addition, Destiny 2’s weapon slots are divided into three sections: kinetic, energy and power weapons. Unfortunately, Xbox One players will miss out on exclusive content (That has yet to be announced).
