Next year, the TMNT will be celebrating their 40th anniversary, and it is crazy to think that not only are these pizza-loving turtles going to be 40, but we have been enjoying Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games for over 30 years!
Rather than spitting your pizza over the screen at our picks, we encourage you to put your own top 10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games in the comments section.
10: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue
Nintendo Game Boy
The third and final game released for the original Game Boy was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue. This was unlike any other TMNT game that came before it. You start out with only Mikey to play as and you have to rescue the other Turtles. Instead of the linear beat-em-up style gameplay that we were used to with our Ninja Turtles games, this one was more of a “Metroidvania” style of game as it had an emphasis on exploration. It is a fun experience and one that people have come to love more over the years.
9: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
NES
Out of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games released for the NES, The Manhattan Project is the best. This is like a sequel to the Arcade Game. Each Turtle now has their own special move and there are also some deeper cuts with the villains which fans loved. The gameplay is very similar to the Arcade Game, but it just feels more fleshed out and challenging here. The only thing that sucks about this game is that it has some badass box art that has Triceritons on it, but they are not in the game!
8: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan
Nintendo Game Boy
The first of three Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games to be relapsed on the Game Boy is the best. To be fair, all three games are fun in their own way. While this may be a very simplistic beat-em-up, Fall of the Foot Clan has a real charm to it that makes it so much fun to just pick up and play. It has some fantastic graphics for the time, way better than the Ninja Turtles game on the NES that is for sure! What it lacks in sophistication, it makes up for in Foot Ninja slaying fun!
7: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze
Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS
Here we have a game that may surprise people on this top 10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game list! This is a real hidden gem, based on the awesome 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot from Nickelodeon. Danger of the Ooze is a 2D Metroidvania style game that has light RPG elements and a lot of exploration. This captures the spirit of the TV show perfectly and it is a game that deserves way more praise than it gets. If you want something more than just another TMNT beat-em-up, check this one out.
6: TMNT
Game Boy Advance
Based on the epic TMNT movie from 2007, the Game Boy Advance version of the game is the best that we would get. The consoles got decent Prince of Persia style action platformers. However, the Game Boy Advance got a tremendous old school beat-em-up style game. Think of a more basic, Scott Pilgrim game and that is pretty much what we have here. There are some light RPG mechanics here that add depth to the game, but it is the hard hitting beat-em-up action that makes this such a fun and addictive game to play.
5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist
Sega Mega Drive/Genesis
While Sega was not allowed to have a port of Turtles in Time, they still managed to get their own epic TMNT game, The Hyperstone Heist. It has fewer, but longer levels than Turtles in Time. While it may not be as good as that game, this is still Turtle butt kicking action! The controls are nice and tight and unlike Turtles in Time, you have a dedicated run button. It is a real shame this always gets overshadowed by Turtles in Time as on its own, The Hyperstone Heist is a lot of fun, if only Konami had used a bigger cart so they could have had more levels and bosses!
4: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003
Nintendo Game Cube, PlayStation 2, Xbox
Here we have the first game based on the awesome 2003, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. This follows the events of the first few seasons of the show, but each Turtle will experience the story slightly differently. You can also play through it as Casey Jones and Master Splinter, both of whom also experience the story in a different way! This is a 3D version of the classic 2D Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. It was hated on for being shallow back when it was first released, but this is such a fun game and the best out of the four that were based on the 2003 animated series. There is also a solid 2D version for the Game Boy Advance.
3: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Arcade
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game is one of the most iconic arcade games of the late 80s and early 90s. This thing was huge and it was like every arcade, pizza place, convenience store, or movie theatre had it! It was just like you were playing through an episode of the show! It had the theme, the voices and it allowed up to four people to play it at once! It truly is an arcade classic and we would argue that this is more than just one of the top 10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, it is one of the greatest arcade games of all time, especially when it comes to the beat-em-up genre.
2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Super Nintendo
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is a rare occasion where the home port is vastly superior to the arcade version. Here we not only get extra levels and bosses, but the gameplay is deeper too. Slamming Foot Soldiers into the floor and throwing them into the screen is now done on purpose. Adding an extra level of skill to the game that is not in the arcade version. While the sprites may be smaller, they still capture the animated series perfectly. Plus, the SNES version has a rocking soundtrack that makes playing through each of the nine levels even more exciting. This is not just one of the best Turtles games, it is one of the best games that the Super Nintendo has to offer.
1: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the Turtles game that all of us who grew up with Turtles in the 80s and 90s dreamed of! It is such a fun homage to the iconic animated series with some of the best pixel art you will ever see. However, it is the gameplay that makes this such an addictive experience. As well as the Turtles, you can also play as Splinter, April, and Casey! Plus, the Dimension Shellshock DLC added two more characters and a survival mode too! This is a prime example of how to bring a beat-em-up into the modern era of gaming.
So, there you have it, our list of the top 10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games. There were a few that were really close to making it on our list so we would love to see if they have made it onto your own list in the comments section! PARTY ON DUDES!!!!
