2022 has been an undoubtedly fantastic year for gaming. We saw a lot of amazing titles released. Stray put us into the paws of a cat exploring a future world where all humans have been replaced with robots. Sifu let us live out our karate movie dreams as we sought revenge in a sleazy underworld. Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope made us laugh as we watched our favorite Nintendo characters once again join forces with the larger than life Rabbids.
But one genre that really saw a lot of love this year was the multiplayer FPS genre. So today we are going to be looking at the best multiplayer FPS games of 2022.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
The Borderlands series is one of the craziest and funniest on the market. Known affectionately as a looter-shooter, the game prides itself on throwing hundreds of weapons at you at breakneck speeds. One of the biggest selling points of the series has always been the fact that it is designed to be played with friends.
And this year we were treated to one of the most unique entries into the series. Based on a DLC for Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland takes the classic Borderlands formula but places it into a fantasy setting. Swords, crossbows, magic spells. Everything you’d expect is there. But it sacrifices none of what made Borderlands so unique. You can still expect hundreds of laughs and non-stop multiplayer fun.
Valorant
When Overwatch came out developers quickly scrambled to copy the game and ride off its success. And it’s a good thing they did as, for a while, Overwtach began to decline massively in popularity due to balancing issues. One of the most successful clones of Overwatch is Valorant.
Created by Riot games, the people behind League of Legends, Valorant has slowly become one of the most popular FPS games out there. So much so that hacks for valorant have become one of the most searched for things on Google. The game owes its success to the diverse range of characters Riot has created. Which is to be expected given their track record with League of Legends. And to top it all off the game is free-to-play as well. Something it had over the original Overwatch.
Overwatch 2
Now in the last section we mentioned the ‘original Overwatch.’ And for those that found that confusing you might be interested to know that Blizzard just recently released Overwatch 2. Now if you didn’t know this then don’t worry, their marketing was less than stellar.
The biggest change is that the game is now totally free-to-play. Most likely designed to help them compete with Valorant and other games in the genre. Overwatch 2 actually replaces the original Overwatch client. So in a sense it was more of a soft reboot rather than a direct sequel. But the changes they did make have brought in a huge new wave of players. Making it, once again, one of the most popular multiplayer FPS games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
No list of multiplayer FPS games would be complete without a CoD title on it. And we were recently treated to the release of Modern Warfare 2. Not to be confused with the Modern Warfare 2 that was released way back in 2009.
As with any new CoD title, the game sold millions of pre-orders and millions more copies upon release. And the multiplayer servers have been full of players ever since release. The main draw of the game was the campaign mode. The original Modern Warfare games are heralded as some of the best FPS games ever made. Mostly because of how good the stories were for them. But there is no denying that the multiplayer mode is what players stick around for.
Rainbow Six: Siege
A lot of shooter fans became disillusioned with the normal format of modern shooters. Too many of them tried to copy CoD. And while these games are fun, they don’t offer a lot of slow paced tactical gameplay. This is where Rainbow Six: Siege comes in.
Siege is still one of the most popular shooters on the market despite releasing way back in 2015. This is because it offers players a more nuanced shooter experience. Players are forced to slow down and plan out their offense or defense.
