The simple, yet lovable app “Flappy Bird” rose to prominence seemingly out of nowhere to become a truly hot commodity among mobile users. The developer becoming quite “freaked out” by his sudden incredible success (where millions of people were downloading it), he removed it from circulation, but now it’s back of course. Naturlaly, while we were experiencing some downtime there people were fervently looking for other similar alternatives, i.e. – games that offer nearly identical gameplay. Luckily, there are more than a few great options in this area which you are still free to explore, assuming you’re not playing the original right now, that is. Anyway, here are some of the top Flappy Bird substitutes out there right now (as of late July 2014)…
Eat Dragonfly
Arguably, “Eat Dragonfly” is one of the better FB alternatives because it not only brings a bit more originality to the mix but also utilizes an additional mechanic where you need to gobble up insects to gain points. Sure, all you really need is the “navigating obstacles” bit to keep you entertained, but what happens when you become quite good at dodging pipes, eh? In short, this game adds that extra bit of “oomph” and challenge that many veteran Flappy Birds players will definitely want to sink their teeth into.
Ironpants
Assuming that you’re ready for a new funny take on the basic FB control concept, “Ironpants” will certainly entertain you with its underpants-clad hero who yes, basically flies through a series of obstacles / boxes. Right from the start, this one feels a bit different from many other Flappy Bird-style games, the character seemingly wanting to move downward quite a bit faster. The end result is a game which feels a bit more sensitive than its predecessor / inspiration all the while managing to be just a bit goofier as well.
Splashy Fish
Well, someone should have seen this one coming from a mile away… Not only does “Splashy Fish” utilize yet another Mario simile character, but also seems to take solace in its decidedly “water world” texture / theme (which is also very much “borrowed”). Not one to be outdone, SF adds another idea to the mix – dodging purple eels. Aside from that, the gameplay is nearly identical as you’re basically navigating your strange little fish through as series of rings or underwater pillars. The addition of various little background objects is nice though, if a bit distracting at times…
Flappy Bee
Flappy Bee? ….yes, that’s right, it’s basically just a reskin of the original flappy birds title but with a bit more visual panache and flair. If you love the basic gameplay of the original yet prefer some more appealing background visuals, Flappy Bee is the game for you. Again, the core concept is to just tap the screen and avoid the pipes, but since the presentation here is a bit more “fancy”, it gets top marks. Those who consider themselves to be achievers will take delight in trying to get all 4 medals though (bronze, silver, gold and platinum).
Clumsy Bird
Right off the bat, the developer for Clumsy Bird makes no bones about their creation, branding it a “clone” from the very start. However, if you think stark 8-bit graphics are what you’ll find here, think again. The biggest part of CB’s appeal is definitely its visuals, which are presented in sharp detail and animation, unlike nearly every other offering on this list. Compared with most other offerings, this one clearly looks superior while also granting online play with friends.
